Lexington, Kentucky is home to all kinds of unique and locally beloved restaurants…
…and when it comes to breakfast or brunch, odds are you’ll find more than one contender for your top spot.
No matter how you like your eggs or coffee, these places have got you covered.
Doodle’s Breakfast and Lunch
262 North Limestone
(859) 317-8507
For nearly fifteen years, Doodles’ has maintained its reputation as not only a quirky and delicious place for daytime eats but an ethically-minded restaurant as well. “Comfort food with a conscience” is their philosophy, and much of their food has its origins locally. As one might guess from their efforts towards sustainability and freshness, Doodles’ offers plenty of meat-free options like their mouthwatering build-your-own omelets, Johnny cakes, and cheesy grits. On weekends you’ll find the place bustling, and guests can rent the space for events. Speaking of local events– you might just spot Doodles’ food truck at one!
Minglewood
159 North Limestone
(859) 523-1236
While Minglewood is only open for dinner on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, on the weekend they’re open for brunch until one in the morning (for any midnight cravings you may have.) During brunch hours and in the evenings, you can order from their small but mighty brunch menu centered around eggs– which includes classic French toast as well as their Fried Egg Tostada. The joint offers a variety of cocktails– like Kentucky Breakfast, with whiskey and rumchata– plus, in the evenings you’re liable to find live music playing.
Josie’s Restaurant
821 Chevy Chase Plaza
(859) 523-8328
Josie’s is serious about breakfast– so much so that you can order it all day! Their pancakes are a local celebrity in their own right, although if you prefer waffles you’re in luck, too. Alongside the essentials there’s everything from quiches to biscuits and gravy, as well as Josie’s lunch and dinner menus. There’s even a “Healthier Side” section for those looking for lighter fare, which has low-carb and low-fat options. With a menu as diverse and robust across the board, you’re just about guaranteed to find something you love.
Zim’s Cafe
215 West Main Street
(859) 785-3690
Zim’s is another local favorite perfect for any meal, be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, or brunch. Zim’s also boasts a bakery, as well as The Thirsty Fox pub. On the weekends there’s brunch, of course, with items like omelets, eggs benedict, and French toast. Zim’s location in the Old Fayette County Courthouse is a must-see, but the restaurant also offers delivery for those who sign up with Delivery Co-Op. On its busiest days Zim’s can get pretty packed, but making a reservation is super easy and can be done directly from their website. Its spot on main street makes it a perfect spot for a morning stroll downtown, with many major attractions within quick walking distance.
Lexington Diner
841 Lane Allen Road
(859) 303-5573
The all-day breakfast menu at Lexington Diner is so extensive that it takes up two separate pages. It’s no wonder that despite serving all sorts of food all day, weekend brunch time is amongst the busiest. With offerings like the Hot Brown Omelet and Lexington Breakfast, the diner lives up to its Central Kentuckian name. Plus, there’s plenty of Irish coffees and mimosas to go around.
