Are you a fan of pumpkin spice and all things fall? If so, you’re in luck, because there are lots of things you can do to embrace the season here in Lexington. From cheering on your favorite football team to hitting the hiking trails, there will never be a dull moment. Here’s a look at some fall festivities that you won’t want to miss!
Check Out Pumpkin Mania at Transylvania University
Every October Transylvania University lights up downtown Lexington during Pumpkin Mania. In the days leading up to the lighting event, people carve hundreds of jack o’ lanterns to be displayed on the steps of Old Morrison. All of the pumpkins remain lit in the evenings for several weeks, so visitors have a chance to stop by before the end of spooky season.
Watch a UK Football Game
It isn’t considered fall in the Bluegrass state until the University of Kentucky football team starts playing. You can snag tickets to attend the games at Kroger Field, tailgate outside with some friends, or host a viewing party at your apartment. Regardless of how you decide to cheer on the Cats, there’s no doubt that football is an important part of this season if you live in Lexington.
Go Pumpkin and Apple Picking at Eckert’s Orchard
Who doesn’t love pumpkin and apple picking in autumn? Eckert’s Orchard, which is located in Versailles, is just a short drive from Lexington. In addition to picking up the perfect pumpkin, you can shop for homemade bakery items (Get some of their famous apple cider donuts!), local jams, and more in the Country Store. They also have a corn maze, hayrides, bonfire sites, and pig races.
Head Out on a Hiking Adventure
Kentucky is home to plenty of must-visit hiking destinations, and fall is the perfect time to hit the trails because it brings with it perfect hiking weather. Take a short road trip from Lexington to Red River Gorge or The Pinnacles in the Berea College Forest to get a bit of fresh air and take in the beautiful fall foliage. There are also several state parks, like Natural Bridge, that you can explore with friends and family.
